UAE Visa Types Explained: Tourist, Employment, Investor, Golden and More
Updated 16 March 2026
The UAE runs one of the most diverse visa systems in the world. There’s a visa type for almost every situation — whether you’re visiting for a week, starting a job, setting up a company, or planning to stay for a decade.
The confusion comes from how many options exist and how the requirements have changed in recent years. This guide covers every main visa type, what it costs, and who it’s for.
Tourist Visa
If you’re visiting the UAE for a short trip, this is your starting point.
Visa on arrival: Citizens of 50+ countries get a free visa on arrival valid for 30 days, renewable once for another 30 days. This includes UK, US, EU, and most Western passport holders. Check the official ICP (Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship) website if you’re unsure about your nationality.
Paid tourist visas:
| Duration | Type | Cost (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days | Single entry | AED 150-200 |
| 60 days | Single entry | AED 250-300 |
| 90 days | Multiple entry | AED 500-600 |
| 5 years | Multiple entry | AED 650 |
Costs include government fee but may not include processing and service charges from airlines or travel agents. Apply through ICP Smart Services, Emirates airline, or an authorised typing centre.
Who arranges it: Airlines, hotels, and authorised travel agents can sponsor tourist visas. You can also apply directly via the ICP website.
Note for Dubai visitors: Many tourist visas are issued specifically for the Dubai emirate. Make sure the visa covers the emirate(s) you plan to visit.
Employment Visa (Work Permit + Residency)
The most common UAE visa for expats. Your employer sponsors you and covers most of the process.
How it works:
- Employer applies for a work permit (Ministry of Human Resources approval)
- You enter UAE on an entry permit
- Status change to residency (or you exit and re-enter)
- Medical fitness test (blood test, chest X-ray) — mandatory for all residents
- Emirates ID registration (biometric appointment at an EIDA centre)
- Residence visa stamped in passport
Timeline: 3-6 weeks typically, though some employers speed this up.
Cost: AED 3,000-5,500 total (government fees for work permit, residency, medical, Emirates ID). Employers are legally required to pay these costs for their employees.
Validity: 2 years standard. Renewable for 2-year periods as long as you remain employed.
Can you change jobs? Yes, but certain conditions apply. Check your contract for any non-compete clauses. Labour law does not prohibit job changes, but a 6-month ban can be imposed in specific circumstances — speak to a UAE employment lawyer if unsure.
Investor / Partner Visa
For people who own a UAE company (mainland or free zone).
Who qualifies: Company shareholders and partners registered on a UAE trade licence.
Validity: 3 years, renewable.
Cost: AED 4,500-7,000 depending on emirate and processing.
Requirements:
- Active trade licence in your name
- Proof of business activity (some banks and offices require this at renewal)
- Standard medical and Emirates ID process
This is the most common visa route for freelancers and solo entrepreneurs who set up a free zone company specifically to get residency. The cheapest free zones for visa purposes (RAKEZ, SHAMS, UAQ FTZ) cost AED 6,000-10,000/year all-in, which makes the investor visa one of the more accessible residency options.

Golden Visa (10-Year Residency)
The Golden Visa was introduced in 2019 and significantly expanded in 2022. It’s a 10-year renewable residency visa with no sponsor required — you’re self-sponsored.
Who qualifies:
Investors:
- AED 2 million+ invested in UAE property (must be fully paid, not mortgaged beyond 50%)
- AED 2 million+ deposited in a UAE investment fund
- AED 2 million+ capital in a UAE business
Entrepreneurs:
- Owner of a UAE startup with a minimum valuation of AED 500,000
- Approved by an official business incubator or accelerator
Specialized talent:
- Doctors and healthcare professionals with recognised certifications
- Scientists and researchers with patents or published work
- Creatives with accolades in art, music, or culture (approved by UAE Ministry of Culture)
- Engineers and technical specialists in priority sectors (AI, renewable energy, biotech)
- Athletes with national or international recognition
Outstanding students:
- Top graduates from UAE universities (GPA 3.75+)

Cost: AED 2,800-4,500 in government fees, plus medical and Emirates ID.

Freelance Visa
A freelance visa lets you live in the UAE and work independently — without needing a full free zone company or an employer sponsor.
Several free zones issue freelance permits specifically:
- TECOM (Dubai Creative Clusters): One of the original freelance permits. Covers media, tech, education, design. AED 7,500-15,000/year depending on the package.
- Sharjah Media City (SHAMS): AED 5,750-7,500/year. One of the cheapest.
- Fujairah Creative City: AED 5,500-8,000/year. Broad activity coverage.
- Ajman Free Zone: AED 4,000-6,000/year. The most affordable option.
Freelance permits come with a trade licence but no office space. You can typically apply for 1-3 residence visas on the permit.
Best for: Writers, designers, consultants, photographers, social media managers, and other solo professionals who want UAE residency at the lowest possible cost.
Remote Work (Digital Nomad) Visa
Introduced in 2021, this is a 1-year renewable visa for employed or self-employed people who work for companies outside the UAE.
Eligibility:
- Employed: proof of employment with a non-UAE company, minimum monthly salary of $3,500 (AED ~12,800)
- Self-employed: proof of freelance income of $3,500/month for the past year
Cost: AED 611 government fee + health insurance (mandatory) + service charges. Expect to pay AED 1,500-2,500 all-in.
What you get:
- 1-year UAE residency
- Ability to open a UAE bank account
- Can sponsor family members
What you don’t get: Work permit for employment by a UAE company (you’re here to work remotely, not locally).
Apply through ICP or Dubai’s Virtual Working Programme (for Dubai specifically, which has a slightly different process).
Student Visa
Available to students enrolled at UAE universities or approved educational institutions.
- Validity: tied to your course duration (typically 1-4 years)
- Sponsored by the educational institution
- Can be converted to an employment visa after graduation
Family Sponsorship Visa
UAE residents can sponsor family members. The sponsor must meet minimum income requirements.
Salary requirements to sponsor family:
- Spouse: AED 3,000-4,000/month (varies by emirate)
- Children: AED 3,000/month minimum in most cases
- Parents: AED 20,000/month (high threshold — difficult to meet for most)
Sponsored family members get the same 2-3 year residency as the sponsor. They can work in the UAE once sponsored (they’ll need a separate work permit from their employer).
